私がTaylor Swiftのファンになったきっかけについてお話します。
I’ll talk about how I became a fan of Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swiftについては、デビュー当時からなんとなく知っていましたが、最初からファンだったわけではありません。
私が彼女をこんなにも支持するようになったきっかけは、2014年のアルバムでした。
あのTaylor Swiftが拠点をニューヨークに移し、カントリーからポップスに転向する、そんな話題が飛び込んできました。
I’ve known about Taylor Swift since her debut, but I wasn’t a fan from the very beginning.
The reason I started supporting her so much was because of her 2014 album.
The news that Taylor Swift was moving to New York and transitioning from country to pop music really caught my attention.
アメリカで若い子がカントリーソングを歌うということは、日本でいえば、若い子が演歌を歌うようなものです。
アイドルが演歌を歌えば、ちょっとかわいがられたり、重宝されると思うんです。
だからTaylor Swiftもかわいがられているのかな、と失礼ながらに思っていました。
2014年のアルバムでは、そんな彼女がポップスに転向する、ということだったのです。
In the U.S., it’s somewhat like a young person singing country music, which, in Japan, would be similar to a young person singing enka.
If an idol were to sing enka, they might be seen as cute or cherished.
So, I foolishly thought that Taylor Swift might be getting that kind of treatment as well.
But then, with her 2014 album, she was making a shift from country to pop music.
That was the turning point.
へえ、あのカントリー少女がついにメインストリームで勝負するのか、そんなふうに思ったことをよく覚えています。
そして、アルバムタイトルを知って初めて気付きました。
I clearly remember thinking, “Wow, that country girl is finally going to take on the mainstream.”
And it was only when I found out the album title that I truly realized something.

この人、私と同い年だ。
Wait, she’s the same age as me.
当時の私は社会人3年目、25歳、いろいろと迷いも出る時期です。
今でこそあまり聞かなくなりましたが、当時は何かにつけて「ゆとり世代だから」と言われていました。
その頃の私は地方で働いていて、人生の一度くらい、上京してみたいと悩んでいました。
At the time, I was in my third year as a working adult, 25 years old, and going through a period of uncertainty.
Although it’s not something I hear much anymore, back then, people often referred to us as the “Yutori generation (Pressure-free generation).”
I was working in a rural area and struggling with the thought that maybe, just maybe, I should try moving to Tokyo at least once in my life.
世界の同い年の人はカントリーで成功を収め、世間に自身の恋愛をネタにされつつも、それを振り払いながら前に進み、チャレンジし続け、さらなる成功を収めようとしている。
そんなTaylor Swiftの姿と、ヒット曲『Shake It Off』が私の背中をぐいと押しました。
One person the same age as me abroad had found success in country music, had her love life turned into tabloid fodder, yet shook it off, kept moving forward, continued to challenge herself, and aimed for even greater success.
Seeing Taylor Swift like this, along with her hit song “Shake It Off,” gave me a strong push.
私も何か変えたい、変わりたい。
自分とTaylor Swiftを重ね合わせ、その年明けに『Welcome To New York』を聴きながら私は上京しました。
I also wanted to change something, to change myself.
I saw a reflection of myself in Taylor Swift, and that New Year, I moved to Tokyo while listening to “Welcome To New York.”
あれから10年。
私は何かを成し遂げたり大きな成功を収めたかというと、そんなことはありあません。
けれども、自分なりにたくさんのことを乗り越えてきました。
そこにはいつも、Taylor Swiftの楽曲と彼女の輝く存在がありました。
彼女は私の中でずっと、手の届かない憧れであり、それでもどこか「目標」でもあります。
It’s been 10 years since then.
As for whether I’ve accomplished something or achieved great success, I haven’t.
But I’ve overcome many things in my own way.
Throughout it all, Taylor Swift’s music and her shining presence have always been there.
She has always been an unreachable idol for me, yet at the same time, in some way, she has also been a “goal” I strive towards.
同じ時代に、同じ年数だけ生きた人が、こんなにも輝いている。
Taylor Swiftは持って生まれたものも美しいけれど、年を重ねるごとに磨きがかかり、見た目も中身もさらに美しさを増しています。
彼女には到底及ばないけれど、私にもまだ何かできるかもしれない。
彼女の存在や楽曲は、いつでも私に希望を与えてくれます。
One person who has lived the same number of years in the same era is shining so brightly.
Taylor Swift is naturally beautiful, but as the years go by, she only gets more refined, with both her appearance and inner beauty growing even more.
I may never reach her level, but I still feel like there might be something I can do.
Her presence and music always give me hope, no matter what.
だからこそ、私はTaylor Swiftがこんなにも好きなのです。
That’s exactly why I love Taylor Swift so much.
